Rabbits symbolizing the patience, wisdom and gentle Yin energy of the Chinese New Year 2023, Year of the Water Rabbit

The date of the Chinese New Year is determined by the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Chinese New Year 2023 began on Sunday, January 22nd and lasted until February 9th, 2024. Based on the zodiac cycle, the Water Rabbit comes only once every 60 years — making 2023 a rare and quietly powerful year.

As we transitioned out of the tumultuous Year of the Tiger, the mantra for 2023 was to contemplate the events of that wild ride with grace and generosity — toward yourself and those around you.

Water Rabbit 2023: Chinese Zodiac Wisdom for the Lunar New Year

The Water Rabbit

The Rabbit is the fourth animal of the 12-year Chinese zodiac cycle and holds a uniquely honored place in Chinese astrology. The Rabbit is the only zodiac animal that sits alongside Chang'e, the Goddess of the Moon, making it one of the most favored signs in the entire zodiac — a symbol of patience, elegance, and good fortune.

Water suggests longevity and peace. The spirit of the Water Rabbit is gentle, amicable, and adaptable, with a flexible and open mindset. Both Water and Rabbit are Yin in nature, together representing sensitivity, intuition, and deep inner peace. Water asks us to reflect on our relationship with resources — money, community, nourishment, energy, and time.

Those born in the Year of the Rabbit are typically physically active, social, and somewhat traditional. Rabbits are wise and cautious, can be sensitive and insecure, and are often the natural peacemakers in any room.

The Water Element

People associated with the Water element move through life with characteristic fluidity and grace. They embody the virtues of wisdom, aptitude, and mental agility — bright minds with an innate ability to adapt and flow.

The union of Water and Rabbit in 2023 confirmed this as a year to pursue what you truly want — but with awareness. This combination tends toward an all-or-nothing energy, so mindfulness around avoiding excess and resisting bad habits was especially important. The year rewarded those who moved with intention rather than impulse.

Chinese Medicine Wisdom for a Water Rabbit Year

In Chinese medicine, the Water element governs the Kidneys and Bladder — the organs of willpower, longevity, and our deepest reserves of energy. A Water Rabbit year called us to nourish these reserves rather than deplete them. Rest, reflection, hydration, and grounding practices were the medicine of this year.

The Yin nature of both Water and Rabbit made 2023 an ideal time for inner work — journaling, meditation, Qigong, and gentle movement. Rather than pushing outward with force, this year supported turning inward with curiosity and care.

Looking Back, Moving Forward

The Water Rabbit year offered a gentle but firm invitation to slow down, listen deeply, and move with wisdom rather than urgency. If you felt called to reflect, simplify, or reconnect with what truly matters during 2023 — that was the Water Rabbit working its quiet magic.
