How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture works by interacting with the body’s nervous system, circulation, and regulatory processes. When fine, sterile needles are placed at specific points, they stimulate sensory receptors in the skin and underlying tissue. This input is carried through the nervous system, influencing how the brain and body process pain, stress, and internal balance.

Research has shown that acupuncture can help modulate pain pathways, reduce inflammation, and regulate the autonomic nervous system—the system responsible for shifting between states of stress and rest. It has also been shown to influence the release of neurotransmitters and endorphins, which play a role in mood, pain perception, and overall well-being.

Because these systems are interconnected, acupuncture often has effects beyond a single symptom. Treatment may support improved sleep, digestion, hormonal regulation, and greater physical and emotional stability.

From a Chinese medicine perspective, these physiological changes reflect a restoration of balance within the body’s systems. Rather than forcing a specific outcome, acupuncture creates the conditions for the body to regulate itself more effectively.

Treatment is always individualized. Points are selected based on your specific presentation, allowing care to be both targeted and adaptive over time.
