Low-Level Light Therapy

How should I prepare for my treatment?

  • The light must be in close proximity to the treatment area, so the skin should be free of clothing and makeup.

  • Eye protection is required and will be provided.

  • Contraindications: Avoid use for children under 12, over the breast or stomach of a breast-feeding or pregnant person, or if the patient uses photosensitizing drugs like Accutane, receives steroid injections, or has a history of seizures.

What does the treatment consist of?

Originally developed by NASA, low-level light therapy, or photobiomodulation, is based on Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology and is the application of light to the body for therapeutic benefits.  Typically, the treatment consists of 12 sessions spread over four weeks, allowing three treatments per week.  For acne, seek therapy at the first sign of a breakout.  LED light therapy does not contain UV rays, so it is suitable for regular use and is also safe for all types and colors of skin.  This treatment is for all skin types and is non-ablative, non-invasive, painless, and requires no downtime.

Depending upon the reason for treatment, you will be in the most comfortable position for the user - seated or lying comfortably.  Once positioned, clients are encouraged to relax, meditate, do breath work, or listen to relaxing music.  Normal activities can be resumed immediately after use.

How does it work?

Using varying wavelengths of LED light penetrates the body at different depths.  For example, the blue LED light reduces the activity of sebaceous glands, which are small oil-producing glands in the skin.  This reduction in activity causes the glands to produce less oil, possibly improving acne symptoms.  Blue light has been shown to kill a type of bacteria that contributes to acne by causing inflammation in the skin.  Red light is believed to act on fibroblasts, which are the skin cells responsible for collagen production, thereby improving scarring and signs of aging.  Additionally, the red light increases the activity of the mitochondria inside the cells.  The mitochondria are considered the powerhouse of the cell, and this stimulation allows for tissue repair and pain control.
